About the artist: Nafir is an Iranian artist who was born in Tehran and whose works are influenced by traditional Iranian art and culture. With his art, Nafir makes a statement against censorship and for freedom worldwide. Nafir has been active as a street artist in public spaces since 2008 and his art is no longer limited to Iran.

About the artist

Nafir is an Iranian artist born in Tehran whose work is influenced by traditional Iranian art and culture. The son of a carpet merchant who worked in the city’s main bazaar, his childhood and youth were filled with the colors, patterns and textures of his country’s artisanal and artistic heritage, which serves as his source and inspiration.

Using spray paint and stencil techniques, Nafir manages to find a space in the intricate Persian patterns in which he develops portraits that mostly focus on women. Nafir wants to bring women back into the public sphere in Iran. By stencilling unveiled faces of Iranian women on centuries-old carpets and sticking them on the street, he wants to support the disillusioned and hopeful Iranian youth and confront the taboos of a regime.

In the face of censorship and oppression by the Iranian government, Nafir began his journey as a street artist back in 2008 to make a statement against censorship and for freedom with his art. His works can be found all over the world and have been used in protests all over the world.
